What to Expect During a Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Session

Psychedelics and other psychedelic-adjacent medications used for mental health treatment are very different from anesthesia or being “put to sleep.” At therapeutic doses, psychedelics do not cause loss of consciousness. Most people remain awake and aware during treatment, though their perception of thoughts, emotions, and surroundings may temporarily feel different.

At Homeward Therapy, we use both sublingual and intranasal prescribed psychedelic-adjacent medication. Depending on the method used, the onset and intensity can vary slightly. Sublingual medicine typically comes on more gradually and often feels gentler and longer-lasting, while intranasal medicine tends to take effect more quickly and may feel a bit more intense at first. In both cases, the experience is carefully monitored by licensed medical professionals to ensure safety and comfort.

During a session, many people report a deep sense of relaxation, reduced mental chatter, or an increased ability to observe their thoughts and emotions without feeling overwhelmed by them. Some notice changes in perception, such as time feeling slower, sounds or colors seeming more vivid, or the mind drifting into a reflective or dream-like state. Others experience mental imagery or a feeling of emotional openness. These effects are temporary and are part of how psychedelics help the brain step out of rigid patterns of thinking.

It’s important to understand that every person’s experience is unique. Some sessions feel calm, soothing, and peaceful. Others may bring up strong emotions, memories, or insights. While this can feel unfamiliar, it is often meaningful and this is where therapy plays a crucial role. No matter what comes up for you during your experience, we are here to support you.

What to Expect After a Session

Most psychedelic-assisted therapy sessions, particularly those conducted at home with nurse supervision, last approximately two to four hours from start to finish. Afterward, people commonly feel calm, reflective, or tired. Many report subtle but meaningful shifts in mood, clarity, or emotional lightness over the following day or two.
